The Department of Malayalam had its inception way back in 1981, by merging the faculties of Malayalam and Hindi, as Department of Oriental Languages. Rev. Dr. M. J. Zacharias (Rev. Dr. Z. M. Moozhoor) was appointed as the first lecturer in the department. Prof. P. C. Devasia joined the department in 1982. The present Head of the department, Dr.Joshy Varghese joined as assistant professor in 1996. Prof. P. C. Devasia and Rev. Dr. M. J. Zacharias have retired after fulfilling their illustrious service in 1997 and 2002 respectively.

From the years 1996 to 2002, the Malayalam association of our college functioned under the name JACS and from 2002 onwards, it was rechristened as Malayalam Sahithyavedi and is actively partaking in promoting the literary sensibilities of our students in their Mother tongue. As part of its activities, the association takes special care to nurture the artistic and intellectual potentials of our student’s .We promote Literary competitions, publication of manuscript magazines and invited lectures from eminent people of literary repute.

The association has a unique legacy of serially publishing 200 manuscript magazines starting from the year 2000. In honor of distinguished Man of letters late Prof. O. N. V. Kurup, the association has framed a repertoire of his published works in manuscript form this year. The department has five publications to its credit. Malayala Sahitya Vedi has so far organized around 100 invited lectures pertaining to Malayalam language and literature.

The current academic year 2016-2017 is to be enshrined in glorious letters in the history of literary programmes in the backward district of Idukki. A special library is being dedicated to the tribal population of Chinnar and this library comprising more than thousand books and publications, becomes a novel initiative by the department .Numerous literary wings such as Narrative Forum, Poetry Forum. Reading Forum, Debate Forum etc function under the banner of Malayala Sahityavedi. The activities of our Department and Association have been featured in many channels and newspapers. Dr. Joshy Varghese is the present Director of Malayala Sahityavedi.
